Step cracks are caused by external pressure on the wall when a combination of horizontal and vertical stresses is present. Step cracks follow the block up the wall. These diagonal foundation cracks can be caused by differential settlement of soil. How these cracks are dealt with depends on the extent of cracking and the exact cause. Large new cracks are probably caused by ongoing settling. Examine the ground around the foundation for puddles or disturbed earth. Be sure water is routed away from the home and repair gutters and downspouts.

But remember, when dealing with salesmen, in the waterproofing business it’s “buyer beware”. Most get a percentage of the sale and don’t consider it their job to save you money. They charge as much as they can. If they see a problem that can be fixed at low cost, or one that has a simple solution, they won’t mention it, but will only talk about “preventing serious damage” and try to scare you into signing a big contract.
