Efflorescence is the white powdery crystal-like substance is normally found on the inner surfaces of masonry walls. These salts usually originate inside the masonry or mortar, or migrate through capillary action from the ground below or are brought in by air pollution. They are the minerals that were originally dissolved in the water and are left as the water evaporates. Efflorescence can be removed with a wire brush and muriatic acid.
